We are now a well established, very friendly mixed group of singers and would-be singers, enjoying the well documented benefits of joining a choir. We meet every alternate Thursday in St John's Ambulance Hall, Rax Lane, from 10.30 until 12 noon. Come along and give us a try with no commitment. We fluctuate in membership, numbering around 60, but have a few places at present.
Always in need of Tenors and Basses!
We sing under the guidance and musical direction of Mark Hewitt who is a composer and choral director living in Somerset. He initially trained at the Royal Northern College of Music and at Manchester University. He has taught at the RNCM and Chetham’s school of music in Manchester before moving to the Isle of Skye, where Mark enjoyed working as a choral director and music animateur. After his years on Skye, Mark moved south to train as a secondary school music teacher and enjoyed working in Dorset schools as well as being the A level Music course leader at Exeter College.
He also currently conducts Parnham Voices in Beaminster. He has choral compositions published by Firehead Editions and recently has produced a cd with Prima Facie Records of contemporary Christmas carols for release in December 2017 with Kantos Chamber Choir. Mark works for the Arts Development Company on their Face Forward programme which gives young people access to arts and heritage activities to develop their employability skills. He is a strong advocate for the arts as a means of enriching our lives, discovering new things about the world, ourselves and others.
No auditions imposed. We sing from printed words and music, in parts, and accompanied by keyboard and backing with Mark teaching and conducting.
The new term begins on 12th September 2019 and runs fortnightly. Telephone for up-to-date information.
