Book Group 3
To join this group you just need an interest in reading a variety of books and a commitment to read one each month. The aim is to think about the book a bit more deeply than we would if we read it alone. We are not 'intellectuals' - just keen readers and we always have an animated and interesting discussion. It is amazing what new insights you get from talking to other group members.
The book group was set up in January 2014 and meets throughout the year. The meeting starts with a brief chat over refreshments. Then members use a list of discussion questions to discuss different aspects of the book.
We usually borrow a pack of books from the library group book collection; these have been carefully chosen by the librarian and tend to be fairly recent novels which reflect the issues of the world today or the recent past. However, we are open to suggestions from members for future reading.
We don't all enjoy every book but we are finding new authors whom we wouldn't have looked at before.
Books we have read recently:
- Muriel Barbery: The elegance of the hedgehog
- Kazuo Ishiguro: Never let me go
- Simon Mawer: The glass room
- Ngozi Adiche: Half of a yellow sun
- Kate Atkinson: Life after life
- Pat Barker: Regeneration
- Anon: A woman in Berlin
- Daphne Du Maurier: Rebecca
