Brackley and District U3A – Committee Member Profiles

Terry – Chairman

Terry Terry moved to Brackley with Avril in 2016 to be closer to their daughter and family.

He retired in 2011 after spending several years as the National Accounts Manager for the UK's leading supplier in the wine industry developing their business in the hotel and restaurant sectors.
Prior to this Terry worked for many years as the UK & Americas/Caribbean Export Manager for Gallaher International Ltd.

When he retired, he became a volunteer driver for the NHS Patient Transport Service in West Sussex. This involved taking people back and forth for their cancer, dialysis and other treatments. He describes this as "A fascinating role where I met so many wonderful patients who sometimes made you cry, and sometimes made you smile. I was hijacked by a disturbed lady, threatened with murder by a really sick man and arrested for supposedly aiding a patient to steal from a shop".

Terry became our chairman in June 2019, he is part of the following groups: Science & Technology, Scrabble, Sunday Outings and ATAC. Apart from all of this he also our 'Speaker Seeker'.

Steve – Vice Chairman

Steve I moved to Brackley with Karen my wife in 2014 to be near our daughter who lives in Aylesbury.

I retired from Bath & North East Somerset Council where I worked as a Highways Inspection for 31 years.

I am Vice Chairman and cover for Terry when he is not able to attend meetings. I set up the sound system and seating as required, help with the quiz and with refreshments at the monthly meetings.

Karen - Membership and Business Secretary

Karen I moved to Brackley from Bath with my husband Steve in 2014 to be near our daughter who lives in Aylesbury.

I took early retirement in 2013 as Customer Services Manager for a National Laundry Company in Bristol.

I am Membership Secretary and Business Secretary dealing with all Brackley & District U3A enquiries and passing them on to the relevant committee member. I help with the theatre group and go to the traditional dancing group.
We have a quiz group which I am involved in. I am responsible for producing and sending out the newsletter every month to all members of the U3A.

Ian Nixon - Group Coordinator

Ian Nixon My career has spanned Mechanical & Electrical Engineering in the Aviation Industry. Work & Method Study in a Local Authority and the Plastics Industry followed by Works Management, Sales and Business Development in the Printed Carton Industry.

I had never heard of U3A until I retired and went to live in Spain in 2004. I needed something to occupy my time and met a retired U3A fan who encouraged me to set up a U3A in Denia in the Valencian Community.

The inaugural meeting was in January 2006 and Denia U3A now has over 900 members. Chairman were known as Presidents in Spain, which went well with my Surname.

I returned to the UK in 2015 and became involved with a newly formed Brackley & District U3A. I chaired the steering Committee for 6 months followed by a further 3 years as Chairman before handing over to Terry Pigott. I am still on the Committee as Groups Coordinator and help with the Theatre Group accounts.

Marie – Treasurer

Marie I moved to Brackley from Yorkshire in 1972 with husband Brian, our daughter Helen was born 6 weeks later. I spent most of my working life in accounts, hence the position of treasurer keeping a beady eye on the group's finances. I am involved with the craft, theatre and traditional dancing groups and also help to run the quiz group.

Alison – Publicity

Alison Father's career meant ending school life in Oxford, where I met Ian.

Typing was/is a passion, to be a P.A. my goal. Start at the bottom and learn, my Father's wise words. City Council (shorthand/type back all day) and NHS Surgeon Secretary. I'm not good with blood and some of the things I typed! Someone had to lose 4ft (heard it wrong!) forefoot. Then P.A. - 18 years. Times change and bosses were meant "to do" for themselves. A new role, Office Manager, and a very passionate team working in a charity. I loved those seven years. Starting to stop. Trying to work part time and becoming involved with U3A proved it was time to end the routine for good.

Married nearly 40 years with lots of fun and love and the one telephone call "pedestrian versus lorry" you don't want to take. Life, as we knew it, took a different path.

Adventures - camped just off the Arctic circle, played in the snow top of Ben Nevis (August), climbed Dunn's River falls, Jamaica to name a few. But sitting in a field with the other half and a four-legged friend is my idea of heaven.

The U3A Steering Committee set me on my retirement journey - minutes, publicity, singing, dancing, walking, table tennis, theatre and ATAC and now National Trust.

Definitely no time to work.

Kathy - Secretary

Kathy Kathy has lived in Hinton in the Hedges for approximately 30 years with her husband Paul. She has two sons, one of whom lives in Brackley with her two very entertaining grandsons, who expect her to be a football forward, a rugby scrum half, Martina Navratilova and a table tennis ace all in one day. The only one she can claim to be moderately proficient at is table tennis as a result of being a member of the lovely U3A Table Tennis group since its inception. She also belongs to the Science and Technology group (despite being a Luddite), and the Walking and Scrabble groups.

Kathy is a volunteer driver with the SNVB taking local residents to hospital, GP and other assorted appointments. She has recently become the Minutes Secretary for the very civilised Committee where no-one talks over each other and there is often cake.

Mike – Webmaster

Mike K Mike was born in Blackpool, moved to Oldham when he was 12 where he later met Helen, his wife, when they were both in the 6th form.

He has a degree in Astronomy from UCL and in Telecoms from University of Essex. He started a long career in Telecommunication Software in 1974 in Essex, retiring in 2010 in Oxfordshire.

Interests include tinkering with and mending Android phones and Windows PCs, playing badminton, table tennis, canasta and generally frolicking at traditional dance.

He enjoys maintaining the U3A website as this keeps his “hand in” as closely as he would like these days.
