Poetry Group
As the writer Bob Shubinski explains “ Poetry is word-music, an art which paints pictures with words and sounds. Since the sounds greatly increase the effect of the words, poems must be read aloud to provide fullest enjoyment “. Poetry Group 1 is the ideal environment in which to do just that. At our monthly meetings, each member of the small group reads aloud one or two poems that they have chosen on the topic of the month. The group then discusses the poems in a relaxed, informal atmosphere.
The Poetry Group meets on the third Monday of each month (at Brackley Library) from 10:30 till 12:00.
Group Convenors are Tim East and Carolyn Hunter. To contact the group please click here: Poetry Group Convenor
Poetry Group Visit to Weston Hall, Weston
The Poetry Group visited Weston Hall, on 16 July 2018, to see the house where Mary Leapor, Brackley’s ‘Forgotten Poet’ lived and worked as a cook’s maid for a time in the mid-1730s. It has since become the home of the Sitwell family, including Sir Sacheverell Sitwell and where his sister, Dame Edith and brother, Sir Osbert were regular visitors.
They were shown around the beautiful house by Sacheverell’s daughter-in-law, Susanna Sitwell. Susanna (shown in the centre of the photograph) was a font of knowledge, making the visit both interesting and enjoyable. A special treat was a viewing of original volumes of Mary Leapor’s poetry books printed posthumously in 1748 and 1751.
The Group would like to express their thanks to Carolyn and Tim for all the research they have done on Mary Leapor and for arranging a very interesting and enjoyable visit to Weston Hall.
