U3A started in France at the Faculty of Social Sciences in Toulouse in 1973. In France the Third Age University is mostly associated with a local university. By the early 1980's, the scheme reached the United Kingdom where its nature was radically changed to be more a self-help organisation for people of mature age. This model is also used in Australia, New Zealand, the Dominican Republic and South Africa.

Bishop's Stortford U3A was started in 1985, and currently has in excess of seventy interest groups, with a total membership in excess of 1,000. The annual membership fee is £15.
