Garden Visits

WHERE:Various venues
WHEN:Plan below with further details announced at the monthly meeting. This group usually has a table at the monthly meeting.

The Garden Visits group aims to visit a number of different gardens each year, primarily during the spring and summer months. Sometimes these visits include optional talks or garden tours by a senior member of the gardening staff at the property. Fairly local outings within the county are generally reached by car-sharing but for longer trips we use a coach. Sometimes the garden we visit is part of a larger estate that includes a property or other feature of historical or architectural significance. In that case the visit is offered to members of those groups and we all go together. The outings are relaxed and enjoyable with enough time allowed for members to enjoy the café on offer as well as time to spend in the nursery or gift shop where these are on site.

The members choose where they want to go each year. For 2022 we have scheduled one visit a month from March through to September plus an early evening visit to a Christmas garden in December. 2 or 3 more local visits are being investigated but the venues concerned will not have their 2022 site plans finalised until early spring. In addition some group members are interested in a short break focussing on gardens and options for this will follow. Please click on the 2022 Garden Visits link on this page and/or check the calendar for more information.

Members of this group attend as many or as few of the garden visits as they wish. Like all u3a groups we are self-funding so the cost of each visit is paid by the member who is going on the trip. In addition all members of the group pay an annual subscription towards group running costs. 2021/2022 this is £2.50. Members receive regular updates via email as well as access to the website information. They are also invited to submit garden visit requests to be included in the next round of voting and then invited to the annual planning meeting.

Now that we have a schedule members have outlooked which gardens they would like to attend. Using this information I am working with the venues on plans for each day. The coach company has been chosen and will be Hodgsons of Barnard Castle using a tourer specification coach which is comfortable and also has features such as air-conditioning, 3-point seatbelts, and a toilet on board. As the plan for each venue is completed it is being sent to all members via email and also posted here on this page so please click the links for more information.

Birkheads Secret Garden is now fully booked and all who are going have paid. Ripley Castle and Gardens and The Alnwick Garden/Alnwick Castle trips are now open for booking. Others will follow in the coming weeks.

New members are very welcome. Please contact Pam by clicking on the little bluebird on this page.
