Charitable Card Makers in Biddulph U3A

The charitable card making ladies of Biddulph U3A 'Cardmaking Group', under the leadership of Rita Bellwood, are busy, yet again, this year making cards to sell to their families and friends in order to make a substantial donation to a chosen charity.

This year the charity they have chosen is 'PHA -UK' which acronym stands for 'Pulmonary Hypertension Association UK'. Now the group are busy raising funds for this worthwhile cause.

This is actually the fifth year that the kindly ladies of this group have been involved in raising money for a chosen charity. Every year a different charity is chosen which has some connection and some significance for one of the card making members.

Over the past years the group has raised the incredible sum of £ 2,545 .00 ! Last year £ 500.00 was raised for the' Cheshire Downs Syndrome Support Group' and the year before £500.00 for the Newcastle-under-Lyme based 'Peter Pan Day Nursery'. In 2014 the charity selected was 'Dementia UK' when £545.00 was donated and, in 2013 ,the fantastic sum of £1,000 was raised for 'Macmillan. Nurses'.

Well Done Ladies...... not only do you make beautiful cards but you all are a real credit to Biddulph U3A!

.
Oct 2017

As previously reported the caring ladies of the Card Making Group have once again raised a substantial amount of money to donate to a local charity. They raise the money by selling their surplus cards to family and friends.

This year the charity was chosen by member Dorothy Dear whose grandson, Eddie, attends the 'Peter Pan Nursery Centre', based in Newcastle -under Lyme.

Eddie, now aged four, attends this nursery for four hours a week and the nursery caters for children, up to the age of five, with a wide range of special needs. The nursery not only provides provision for these children but also vital support for their families.

The cheque was presented to the Head of Fund Raising at the nursery, Christina Hunter, by the Card Making Group's leader, Rita Bellwood, with all the other ladies of the group in attendance. Also in attendance was Eddie who was accompanied by his parents, Peter Dear and Catherine Cook.

Christina Hunter commented ,' The nursery is solely dependent on the generosity of local companies and local community groups. We are so grateful to the ladies of Biddulph U3A Card Making Group for their wonderful donation!'

The Ladies of Biddulph U3A Card Making Group Give a Fifth Donation to Charity

For the fifth year running the charitable ladies of Biddulph U3A 'Card Making Group 'have given a generous donation to a charity.

Every year the ladies decide among themselves as to which charity the sale of the surplus cards they have made is to be donated. The chosen charity is always one that has a particular significance to one of their members.

This year the charity chosen is the 'Pulmonary Hypertension Association U.K' and was selected by Janet Shingle. Janet's husband had suffered from pulmonary Hypertension for ten years before, sadly, dying from it five years ago. This particular charity is the only charity in the UK that is dedicated to the PH community. This year, once again, the ladies of the group have been highly successful and were able to donate a cheque of £500.00

Janet explained that pulmonary hypertension is a very rare and is not easily diagnosed as only around 15,000 people in the world are diagnosed with this condition. People suffering from pulmonary hypertension find that their vital organs are slowly destroyed as the condition causes oxygen failure around the body.

Unfortunately, there are not many medical centres or facilities that are equipped to deal with this condition and Janet and her husband had to travel as far as Sheffield to get medical attention. At present there is no cure for this condition but, due to research, treatment is slowly improving.

Over the past five years the creative members of the 'Card Making Group' have raised the incredible sum of three hundred and forty five thousand to donate to various charities. These charities have been 'MacMillan Nurses', 'Dementia U.K.', 'Peter Pan's Day Nursery' and 'Cheshire Down's Syndrome Support Group'.

The group's charity treasurer, Linda Huppert , has chosen the charity for 2018-2019 which will be one devoted to the research and support for breast cancer.

Biddulph U3A Card Making Group Donate £500.00 to Charity

Once again the talented and community minded ladies of Biddulph U3A Card Making Group have reached their target of raising £500.00 for their chosen charity. In this instance the money raised was give to the United Hospitals of the North Midlands Cardiology Care Department.

Over the past years this group of ladies has raised the fantastic sum of over £4,000.00 to give to a variety of local and national charities. Each charity has been chosen by one of the members of the U3A Card Making Group which has some relevance to her or to her Family.

Over the years the charities that have benefited from these dedicated ladies' fund raising include 'MacMillan Nurses','Dementia U.K.' 'Peter Pan Nursery', Newcastle -under-Lyme', 'Pulmonary Hypertension Association', and 'Breast Cancer Care'. The latter being based at the ‘Royal Stoke University Hospital'.

The ladies raise the money by making their very individual cards and selling the cards they do not use to family members, friends and local organisations.
-----
The Cardiology Care Department was chosen by long standing member of the Card Making group, Myrtle Hooper. She chose this charity to support as her husband, Colin, underwent heart surgery R.S.U.H. having a mechanical valve fitted as well as several several 'stents'. Myrtle said that her husband had received such excellent treatment that they wanted to repay the Cardiac Department in some way.

A representative , Sarah O'Reilly, was present from 'UHNM Charities' to receive the cheque for £500.00.

The group was also very pleased to see that Colin Hooper could attend and even more so when he presented each of the ladies with a beautifully wrapped single rose to say thank for all their efforts in fund raising!

Sarah was then presented with a large selection of jewellery, both second hand and new, and also a selection of scarves. The jewellery was very professionally packed in individual bags, all ready for sale, by a member of the Card Making Group, Linda Hubbert,

The jewellery and scarves were donated by the ladies from the three 'Keep-Fit' groups and also the Sewing Group from Biddulph U3A. Sarah explained that the jewellery and the scarves would go on sale to provide funds for the 'Fresh Hair and Beauty Salon' based in the Cancer Department of the 'RSUH.' The salon, run by a team of volunteers, provides a range of services for people suffering from hair loss due to surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy and alopecia.

Sarah O' Reilly remarked, ' I was thrilled with the generous donation and also the other items I have been presented with today. The ladies of the Card Making Group have worked so hard to raise money to support a charity which will benefit and supports local people.'

The leader of Biddulph U3A Card Making Group, Rita Bellwood, commented,'Once again I have been delighted with the effort the ladies in the group have made. I would also like to thank Colin Hooper for the presenting all of us with a lovely rose. This group continues to go from strength to strength by raising money for one of their chosen charities.'
