Precious and Grace' by Alexander McCall Smith.
Book Club 2 have just finished reading the 16th. in the series of Alexander McCall Smith's 'No.1 Ladies Detective Agency' which are all set in Botswana. Although the latest in a very long series, actually the 16th. this novel does stand on it's own and the reader does not necessarily need to have read the previous novels to make sense of this one. The group found it a very 'gentle', easy read which made it a change form the more challenging novels that have recently been selected.
As in all the previous novels in the series the main characters are the 'traditionally built' Mma Ramotswe and her indefatigable assistant, Mma Makutsi. In this novel they are asked to trace a Canadian lady's childhood home and the nurse she members.Whilst trying to solve this puzzle Mma Ramotswe also gets caught up in helping her occasional assistant, Rra Polopetsi, whose has been lured into a very ill advised business decision, involving a dubious 'pyramid scheme', and also in trying to find a home for a stray dog. She dispenses help with her usual sympathy and graciousness and leads the character into the process of compassion, forgiveness and healing which leads all the characters into new beginnings.
On the whole the Group enjoyed the this month's read and found it quite 'comforting'. As a bonus there were several astute insights insights into various aspects of the human character and an interesting insight to life in present day Botswana..
