Ukulele Group
The Ukelele
The name ukulele (“uke” to afficianados) comes from the Hawaiian for “jumping flea”, an allusion to the rapid movement of the player's fingers …..
..... Anyone can learn to play; You don’t need to read music or to have a musical background ....
Everybody should have and play a ‘UKE’ - it's so simple to carry with you and it is one instrument you can’t play and not laugh!
(Or so said George Harrison - did you know that, he along with fellow Beatles John Lennon and Paul McCartney played the ukulele? All were huge fans of Britain’s most famous player, George Formby - although he often played a bangolele).
We have two Ukulele group meetings, one on Monday morning and one on Tuesday morning. Both include players of all abilities. Although we can’t provide tuition for absolute beginners - you will need to teach yourself the basics at home - we can provide some help during the sessions. Our emphasis is to have fun in a friendly and very relaxed atmosphere.
We play all types of music from traditional ukulele songs to arrangements of modern pop and we perform occasional gigs.
Please note that both the Monday and Tuesdays groups currently have waiting lists to join; Feel free to contact either of the group coordinators if you would like to be added.
