Wed 25th October

Annabel kindly hosted our delightful afternoon in October when we enjoyed a wide variety of musical styles.
1. Suzanne:
Bilacus , La Strada Ferata. An atmospheric a cappella recording from an ancient church beside Lake Como. A wonderful souvenir.
2. Geoff:
Gerry Mulligan, My Funny Valentine. Wonderful baritone sax sound with a very romantic story attached.
3. Marie:
Gustav Mahler, Symphony No 5 Fourth Movement Adagietto. This romantic section scored for Harp and Strings became popular as part of the score in the film Death in Venice.
3. Pete:
Gustav Holst, Mercury, the Winged Messenger. The third Planet in the suite although the last to be composed.
4. Brenda:
Luciano Pavarotti, Il Padre Adorato Ai Quai Gelido Orror. A song from Mozart's opera Indomeneo.
5 Lin:
Debussy, Clair de Lune. A lovely romantic rendition by the pianist Moura Lympany.
6. Dave:
James Galway, Mozart's Flute and Harp Concerto. Accompanied by the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra
7. Annabel:
Nigel Hess, score for Ladies in Lavender with violin solo by Joshua Bell. An interesting background story about the actor learning to play the instrument mastered by his screen character.
We finished our afternoon with a second choice from Suzanne of Paul McCreesh from "The Road to Paradise"; from Geoff "Petite Fleur" by Chris Barber; from Pete "Leave the Dishes in the Sink, Ma" by Spike Jones; from Brenda "O Sole Mio" sung by Luciano Pavarotti.
