This page gives advice as issued periodically by the Essex Police Fraud Alert System. Please heed their advice and don't let the scammers and fraudsters win.
Scams are often targeted at older and vulnerable people. Key themes are
- Never trust anyone you don't know and can't verify personally - callers, phone or email.
- Never respond to cold callers - at the door, on the phone or unexpected emails.
- Never allow access to your home by anyone you don't know personally.
- Never give a parcel back to anyone who claims it was incorrectly delivered.
TPS Telephone Preference Service: Just checking that everyone knows you can register both landline and mobiles NOT to allow cold calls. This is not a complete solution as those who operate illegally will continue to do so. However, it does help.
You can register your number at: TPS On-line or call 0345 070 0707.
Many phone operators operate a call protect system for landlines, so do check your provider.
Also, cold calling outside hours 9:00 to 20:00 is illegal - so anything outside these times should be ignored.
