The Theatre Group
This group is only open to current Members of the Belper and District U3A or one of the Derbyshire Cluster U3As.
This is a new group which started in March 2020
The theatre group will be open to those interested in any or all aspects of theatre: performance, productions management, props, scenery, history, design and construction and all genres of theatre, drama, musical comedy ballet, opera.
We will meet regularly twice a month. Once to attend a performance and then for a critical consideration of the performance and other discussions, future event planning including reservations of seats for planned visits.
Screening of DVDs of various productions may also be possible.
The visits will always be by packaged group travel by minibus or coach.
Local theatres (Nottingham and Derby) will not be used.
We propose to use the Crucible and Lyceum at Sheffield, The Curve Leicester, The Birmingham Hippodrome and the Rep, New Vic, Regent and Repertory Theatre Stoke on Trent, Buxton Opera House, Royal Theatre Northampton and of course Stratford On Avon.
While touring companies presenting at receiving theatres would be of interest, it is hoped the group will be open to new productions at producing theatres.
Most visits will be for afternoon matinees. Backstage tours will be included where possible and offered.
There will be an early planning meeting at which the first 5 or 6 visits will be chosen.
Bookings will only be taken for actively involved members.
Payments will be made to the U3A social fund.
As a matter of information, an example of costs; a good quality touring production at Sheffield Lyceum would be about £50 pp. For a repertory performance at Leicester, Birmingham or Stoke it would be about £35. In both cases this assumes a full minibus of 16.
