A brief history of Belfast U3A
Belfast U3A was conceived in Autumn 2000, when a meeting was held to discuss formation of a U3A for Belfast. A small number of groups was set up with meetings held in “Ruby Tuesdays” on the Antrim Road.
In May 2001, Belfast U3A went “live” when full membership was granted by the Third Age Trust. Brian Connors was the first chairman, Ann Hayes secretary and Robbie McElhinney was treasurer.
By August 2001, growing membership and additional interest groups meant a bigger venue was urgently required; the Education Room in Belvoir Forest Park became available and in October 2001, the first meeting took place in the new venue. In March 2002, the first Newsletter was issued.
Following a landslide in Belvoir Forest, a new home had to be found urgently and in May 2003 the first meeting in our new home, the Belvoir Players' Theatre was held.
Monthly meetings were held in this venue until March 2019, when increasing numbers of members necessitated the search for a new, larger meeting place. Meetings are now held in Balmoral Hotel, Blacks Road, Dunmurry.
Belfast U3A continues to grow and develop to meet the wishes and aspirations of its members.
