3. Cooper’s Hill Nature Reserve - Augu
For our August walk, Marion introduced us to Cooper’s Hill Nature Reserve, another hidden Bedfordshire gem which was new to most of the group. The reserve is the largest remaining area of heathland in the county and with the heather in full bloom, it was a glorious sight.
Part of the Greensand Ridge, a wide variety of wildlife can be seen in this SSSI and we were fascinated by the numerous solitary bees and wasps burrowing into the sandy slopes; butterflies, dragonflies, goldcrest and long-tailed tits were also in evidence.
The site includes a number of new wood sculptures, a war memorial and useful information boards, so it is an excellent place to visit; the entrance is next to Ampthill Rugby Club.
