Notices - Open Meeting - 18 June 2019

NOTICES FOR OPEN MEETING AT THE ADDISON
Tuesday 18th June 2019

General Notices
(Unfortunately, Sheila cannot be with us today, as she is unwell, so Mark Haines, as Vice-Chair chaired the meeting. We were pleased to welcome 2 new members and 2 visitors to our meeting today.)

Volunteers wanted
Firstly - Another plea for someone to come forward to take over as Secretary, from October. It would be possible to shadow and I would be happy to guide and support anyone for the first few months if required. It should be said that without a Secretary, Bedford U3A ceases to exist. So, if you feel you might be able to take over, please do speak to me about it. At the very least we need someone to nominally own the role even if we need to share some of the jobs within a team – for example if you don’t feel able to stand here and speak in public or you are unsure about insurance needs then we could find someone else to help with that.

Secondly - Wendy Read will be standing down from the Committee and the role of Catering and Hospitality. If you think you would be interested in this job then do speak to Wendy about what is involved and let me know if you are interested - without someone to do this there won’t be refreshments.

We are also looking for extra people to help with refreshments and put out chairs at the next Ath. meeting – speak to Wendy if you can help with refreshments and Alan Wooding if you can help with set up.

In Case of Emergency cards are still available see me afterwards.
Don’t forget to collect your Bulletin from Ken or Liz before you leave.

Speakers Coming Soon –
At the Ath. on Wednesday July 3rd Surnames by Charlie Haylock. How and why surnames were introduced, how they evolved and their origins, derivations and meanings and here at the Addison on Tuesday 16th July Tax, Care and Toy Boys. David Pinder of Co-op Estate Planning will talk about protecting your family’s nest egg, inheritance tax and other topics.
Notices for National Office

Notification is given of the Annual General Meeting taking place on Thursday 29th August 2019 at the East Midlands Conference centre in Nottingham. More information is available if anyone is interested in attending and booking is now open for the conference – taking place from the 27th August until the 29th.

Local Events
If anyone is planning to go to the Proms last night in Bedford Park and hasn’t yet booked. I have a discount code for Bedford U3A members, see me afterwards.

A number of our members are in the Rock Choir who will be performing at the Stables on Sunday 21st July.

University of Bedfordshire is looking for volunteers to undertake a 4 week study to see if a popular supplement will help improve skeletal and cardiac muscle function in the over 60s. See me for more information.

And finally - as always at this time of the year, the Committee has to review our financial position. It is likely, based on expected increases that we will have to raise both the annual subscription and the charge made at open meetings. We will do our best to keep these increases to a minimum. More details next month.
