NOTICES FOR OPEN MEETING AT THE ATH.
Wednesday 4th March 2020

3 new members and 3 visitors today

Firstly I have to give notice that there will be a Special General meeting of Bedford U3A on Wednesday 1st April at 10am here at the Athletic Club. This brief meeting will take place prior to the commencement of the Open meeting and is being held to address committee membership.

National Office have asked that we ensure members are aware of the advice about Coronavirus - I am sure you have heard quite enough about it but just in case you haven't there is information on the notice board or you can ask me at the end of the meeting.

For those who receive Third Age Matters magazine you will be pleased to hear that from the April issue they will be sent out with compostable wrappers.

As you know Bedford U3A is a member of The Herts Network of U3As. Details of their upcoming events which U3A members can attend are available on the notice board or on our website.

The latest event is a Concert in celebration of U3A Day to be held in London on 3rd June featuring the Brandenburg Singers.

New Members - After the open meeting at the Addison on 17th March, new members are invited to gather at the back of the hall at about 11.30am with their tea or coffee to talk to members of the committee and some of the group leaders about Bedford U3A and what is available for them.

Speakers Coming Soon –

At the Addison on Tuesday 17th March - Tim Wregghitt gives a humorous talk entitled Making a Stand for Chelsea. Don't worry this is not about the football club but about 10 years of organising educational displays at RHS Chelsea Flower Show.

At the Ath on Wednesday 1st April - A talk very appropriate for Bedford. The Lifestory of Glenn Miller - by Howard Slater. A talk about Glen Miller’s life story with a musical interlude of his most famous music' together with the mystery of how and when he died.

Help with coffee/tea at Addison - We need some more volunteers to join the rotas at the Addison to help with the tea & coffee. There are currently 3 teams of 3, but we would like teams of 4 so if you are willing to assist please see Val Muggeridge or speak to me afterwards. Thank you.

One more notice - as we mentioned last month we are trying to reduce our use of plastics, so we suggest that you bring your own reusable cups if possible. When our existing polystyrene cups are used up we will switch to compostable ones which are more expensive so we propose to introduce a charge of 10p for each cup. The coffee or tea and biscuit will still be free!

Finally we would like to wish our U3A Harmony Choir good luck at the Bedford Music Festival on Saturday.

There is much more in the planning process including a Bridge Tournament, a Quiz, a Badminton Tournament and a Study Day on 14th October presented by the RSPB on wildlife including wildlife photography.

Their AGM is on 18th March and we can send 3 members, Michael is going but if anyone else is interested please see him.

There is more information on all of these events on the notice board and on the Bedford U3A website. Our representative for the Herts Network, Michael Barker, is also happy to talk to you about them.

New Members Tea - As we haven't had a good response to these the last couple of times we are proposing something different. After the next meeting at the Addison on 17th March at about 11.30am whilst having your tea or coffee members of the committee and some group leaders will gather to talk to new members about Bedford U3A and what is available for them to do. New members will be sent an invitation to this event.

Speakers Coming Soon –

At the Ath on Wednesday 4th March - Daily Life in Tudor Times when speaker Martin Sirot-Smith appears in Tudor costume to tell of life back then.

A talk about Glen Miller’s life story with a musical interlude of his most famous music together with the mystery of how and when he died.

At the Addison on Tuesday 21st April - The Great Exhibition of 1851 by Maria Greenhill.
Maria Greenhill appears in Victorian costume and takes a look at the wonder that was the Great Exhibition and Victorian inventions.

Now for The Final Notice - the committee have decided that we ought to be doing more to help reduce the use of plastic, so once the existing supply of cups have been used we are intending to purchase compostable ones but unfortunately these are more expensive. SO the best thing would be if all of you would bring your own reusable cups to meetings for the free coffee or tea. We know some of you do already but if everyone did, it would make a big difference. Thank you.
