We were the first gardening group created in Bedford U3A and there has been a number of leaders over the years. As interest in the group grew we moved from meeting in the leader's home to a hired hall and other gardening groups have been formed.
We have garden visits, talks and demonstrations. We are members of the Royal Horticultural Society.
At our meetings a few of us bring flowers from our gardens and we chat about them. We go through a list of jobs to be done in the garden for each month.
Members are encouraged to introduce subjects which we can all discuss and on which we can exchange ideas.
I like to keep our group as informal as possible and give everyone an opportunity to speak since we all come along to talk gardening. Sometimes everyone talks at once and I have to resort to ringing a bell for silence!
We have started a plant sale to to aid U3A funds. This needs the support of all U3A members to be truly successful.
Traditionally we have an August Garden Party which used to be held in members' gardens but in recent years it has been held at The Pavillion Cafe in Bedford Park. We also replace our December meeting with a Christmas lunch.
For practical reasons membership of this popular group has to be limited to 30. We do have a waiting list so if you are interested in joining us please contact me to go on the waiting list.
