Bedford U3A Photography2 Group are a friendly group of people from within Bedford U3A who are interested in photography and its use to make pictures for display, publication, or just simply for fun.
What do Photgraphy2 do?
At our regular monthly meetings we have a ‘Competition’ on a pre-arranged topic to choose 6 pictures that will be shown on the Bedford U3A website. All our monthly competition pictures are shown on our Flickr pages, find them on Flickr by searching for U3A Bedford or use the links from the Bedford U3A website.
We have coffee and a chat during break time and then view portfolios of our members pictures or have a talk or demonstration on a subject of interest to the Group collectively.
FAQ: How does the ‘Competition’ work?
The photograph is the 'thing' that is judged in an anonymous competition by voting in the meeting. There is no prior discussion about the photographs before the vote. Members simply vote for each photograph that they like except their own. The top six by simple majority vote go on to the Bedford U3A web site and can be seen by anyone.
All entries for the monthly competition are placed on the Group’s Flickr pages. (If you do not wish for a particular photo to be publicly exhibited please let us know in advance.)
After the votes have been taken we discuss our pictures. What they are, if that is not obvious, how they were photographed and how they were created or enhanced by the Photographer.
Can you fill me in as to procedure? To whom do I send photos - you? How many? When? Email?
Each month we submit a single entry photograph to SB. SB sends a reminder about a week before the meeting/competition date asking for submissions and giving his dead line date that allows him to collate the photographs for showing at the meeting. He will send you an acknowledgement once he has included the picture in the competition entries.
What format JPG, PDF? Any particular size?
The preferred format is jpg and it should be an original high resolution image of any size (But, probably, no bigger than 8 Mbytes for ease of emailing.)
Each photograph is given a title, so please remember to title your photograph when you send it to SB
Can they be 'worked on’ in Photoshop, or similar, or must they be straight as photographed?
It must be an original photograph taken by yourself or created from a photograph taken by you after the date that the competition subjects/themes were announced. Any form of manipulation is permitted, unless otherwise stipulated.
Group Members are encouraged to bring any other photographs they have taken on a memory stick to our meetings. We usually have time to view a few Members portfolios. Especially, if you have any that you are keen to show us. Often pictures of other activities or occasions.
If you are concerned or uncertain about the use of emails or the other technical media that we use. Do come and talk to one of us. We can explain and help you to join in.
