Our objective is to visit churches and their villages and find out about them. Visits are advertised at the monthly open meetings at Bedford Athletic Rugby Club and the Addison Centre. We have our own desk with a board which contains information for each visit. Dates are added as we get them confirmed. Also we try to ensure there is always someone there to answer queries. The desk is also where you can book your place for a visit as sometimes numbers are limited.
Here is a rundown on what happens on a visit. We meet outside the designated church where you pay 50p for the U3A and are booked in for the visit. Then we usually sit in the church while our guide tells us about the church and the village, pointing out the features of interest. There is an opportunity to ask questions and free time to investigate the church on our own. As most of our guides would rather give their tours free of charge we do like to contribute to the church and this is done individually before we leave the church.
Then there is the opportunity to walk around the cemetery and village, usually unaccompanied.
Refreshments are available after the church visit - tea/coffee and biscuit 20p. Occasionally a Cream Tea is available, if so this is always prepaid when booking a visit and, unfortunately, if you are then unable to come there is no refund.
If you have any contacts or are particularly keen to go to a church just inform us and we will see what we can do.
