6. Trip to Ampthill Park - February 2020

Ampthill Park – February 20th 2020

Despite a forecast of heavy rain and gusty winds eleven stalwart nature lovers set out this morning to explore Ampthill Park. As usual, Marion had reconnoitred an interesting and varied walk. First we wandered amongst the magnificent trees, many of which had been planted by Capability Brown. We soon spotted clumps of Dog’s Mercury which indicated that we were walking through Ancient Woodland. Then we braved the boisterous wind to climb up to ‘The Standing’ where Henry V111 had his hunting lodge. We continued along the Ridge past the memorial cross to the victims of the First World War and on to Katherine’s Cross which marks the site of the castle where Katherine of Aragon was imprisoned pending divorce. We enjoyed panoramic if rather murky views of the surrounding countryside and got back to our cars just before the persistent drizzle turned into a downpour!
