The U3A is a voluntary, self-help organisation run entirely by its own members, for retired and semi-retired people to share in educational, creative and leisure activities.

We are people interested in making our retirement from full-time paid employment enjoyable and fulfilling, meeting together in groups for informal learning.

We provide opportunities for members to form interest groups and to share learning and activities in a wide range of topics. Members, through sharing knowledge, skills and experience, learn from each other. Learning is for enjoyment. No qualifications or awards are sought or offered. Go to our GROUPS page to see a list of our interest groups.

Go to our ACTIVITIES page to see events open to members and more about our General Meetings, which you can attend as a visitor before deciding whether to join us. PLEASE NOTE THAT THESE ARE SUSPENDED DURING THE CORONAVIRUS PANDEMIC (but see the general list of online activities from various sources at the end of the ACTIVITIES page).

Started in April 2001, Beckenham U3A has over 300 members. We are self-governing, but affiliated to the Third Age Trust, a Charity that looks after the interests of all the local U3As in this country. We are part of a worldwide organisation, with more than 1000 groups in Great Britain with over 400,000 members.

We hold a monthly General Meeting (excluding August and December) at which we have a visiting speaker on varying topics; and we have a social meeting in August and December. (Please note that meetings are suspended during the Coronavirus pandemic.)

We hold a Newcomers Meeting twice a year to introduce new members to each other, to the Committee and Interest Group Leaders.

We publish a quarterly newsletter which updates members on our groups and new groups, and gives details of our forthcoming events and excursions, including visits to art galleries, museums, exhibitions, theatres, historic houses and gardens.
