WHAT IS U3A - UNIVERSITY OF THE THIRD AGE?
EDUCATION AND LEISURE FOR PEOPLE BOTH RETIRED AND SEMI-RETIRED
The U3A is a voluntary, self-help organisation run entirely by its own members, to enable retired and semi-retired people to share in educational, creative and leisure activities.
WHO ARE WE?
We are people interested in making our retirement from full-time paid employment enjoyable and fulfilling, meeting together in groups for informal learning. Members, through sharing their knowledge, skills and experience, learn from each other. Go to our GROUPS page to see a list of our interest groups. (The setting up of additional interest groups by members is strongly encouraged.)
Membership is not related to a specific age but the time after full-time employment and parental responsibility.
The word 'university' is used in its original sense, meaning an association of people devoted to a particular activity. The U3A provides opportunities for members to share learning in a wide range of interest groups, not for qualifications but for fun.
Started in April 2001, Beckenham U3A has over 350 members. We are self-governing, but affiliated to the Third Age Trust, a Charity that looks after the interests of all the local U3As in this country. We are part of a worldwide organisation, with more than 1000 groups in Great Britain with over 400,000 members.
We hold a monthly General Meeting (excluding August and December) at which we have a visiting speaker on varying topics; and we have a social meeting in August and December.
We hold a Newcomers Meeting twice a year to introduce new members to each other, to the Committee and Interest Group Leaders.
We publish a quarterly newsletter which updates members on our groups and new groups, and gives details of our forthcoming events and excursions, including visits to art galleries, museums, exhibitions, theatres, historic houses and gardens.
