Basildon & Billericay

Literature 1

This Literature Group has 11 members at the present time (March 2019)
Each month, books ordered from the library are distributed to members, on the understanding that they will
come to the next meeting having read it and being prepared to discuss it within the group.
To start the discussion, one member (who has volunteered to do so) will lead a presentation of the book with
details of the author’s life and initiate a brief exploration of the characters and themes presented.
Discussion, including all group members, takes place during this presentation and continues afterwards.
Members suggest books for the following year’s programme throughout the year and books are then ordered
from the library as they become available for loan.
The December meeting is unusual in that each member brings along a poem, newspaper article or reads a
short passage from a book to share with other group members. We also take the opportunity to celebrate
the festive season in a more light-hearted way than usual!
We cover a wide variety of books and some of the pleasure derives from our being moved out of our comfort
zone and brought to appreciate books that we would not immediately have chosen to read, but which often
turn out to be surprisingly enjoyable.
Every year we include at least one classic novel and one non-fiction title and spend another meeting focusing
all of our attention on a specific genre of writing.
This year, as a genre, we chose to take it in turn to talk briefly about a novel that we had chosen, written in
English, by an author with an ethnic background other than British.
In recent years we have chosen crime, travel, a children’s classic and the graphic novel for our individual and
then shared study of genre.
To give some idea of the scope of our reading, here is a list of the books that we have read and discussed
throughout 2018.
