Music Matinee
The Music Matinee Group primarily watches DVDs of opera, ballet and orchestral concerts.
On that first afternoon, April 8th 2004, the Group watched an old tape of mine, Die Fledermaus, Joan Sutherland in great form. From this successful start our knowledge has increased over the years. A member has informed me of her greater understanding of the genre since belonging to the Group.
Ballet is, I think, still favourite, modern dance as well as the classics.
We have had a speaker, Les Cox, extolling the sound of Sir Harrison Batiste - not for the faint hearted. At another meeting he explained to us how Achille-Claude Debussy moved from the traditional style of composing of his time to creating a modern form that we would be familiar with today.
Just to prove we are not ‘stuck in a rut‘, we recently watched a History of the Hollywood Musical - which everyone enjoyed. Some members were singing along but I had to put a stop to that as we are not here to enjoy ourselves - but to learn!
