This is a group dedicated to flute playing. Led by Coordinator, Derek Bacon, it meets every Thursday from 10.00 to 12.00 at Emmanuel Church, Huddersfield Rd, Barnsley, S75 1DT.
Flutes Galore is not a group for absolute beginners. It was set up in early 2018 with little idea if it would work out but it has grown steadily from a quartet to a group of ten, possibly eleven players in the New Year. Some very good flautists have heard about us and travel considerable distances each week to be with us. We have 10 C flutes, of course, two alto flutes and one bass flute. A few players have taken and are continuing to prepare for flute exams, others prefer to play without the stress of exams. Some started playing when they were young, others have returned to playing after years off, for others it is purely a retirement pursuit. We are an enthusiastic bunch and Thursday mornings are a highlight of our week. We play everything from baroque to pop. We have many friends who are outstanding flautists who do not qualify to join U3A so we occasionally invite them to play as our guests for a concert. We play at BU3A Monthly Meetings, at charity events and in concerts. At present, November 2019, in order to join the group, you need a flute and a bit of experience playing it; if you meet those criteria, I think that you will find a very warm welcome.
