Bearsden & Milngavie

Gardening

Convenor: Carol Watt
Meetings: 1st Tuesday of each month at 10.30
Location: To be announced. Meetings already fixed are set out below

This new group held its first meeting on 2 April 2024.

The group will aim to meet at 10.30 on the first Tuesday of every month throughout the year. Meetings should last around 60 - 90 minutes. During the main growing period (approx. April to October) the group will visit a member's garden for a tour, a coffee and a chat. Opening up a garden is entirely voluntary, i.e. members are not obliged to host the group.

In addition to, or instead of, visits to members' gardens, the group could visit other gardens in Bearsden & Milngavie through, e.g. schemes such as 'Scotland's Gardens'. Or we could visit local garden centres, such as Caulder's, Oakwood or Dobbie's, all of which have cafes. This could involve meeting at the weekend, rather than the scheduled Tuesday.

As with other U3A groups there should be a social as well as an educational / technical element. Members can share their experience of gardening in the area, including what grows well / less well, how / when to prune, how to take cuttings and / or divide plants, how to contend with pests, etc. In other words, all the things that garden enthusiasts enjoy talking about. It would also provide an opportunity for everyone to offer any cuttings, seeds, divisions of plants that were available, and to alert others in the group to gardening-themed events in the area: plant sales; open days; tips on garden centres, etc..

Anyone wishing to join or ask any questions, please use the Message Bird to contact the Convenor, Carol Watt.
