The History and Restoration of Wingfield Station

Held at Belper No28 on Belper Market Place 7pm - 9pm

Speaker : Peter Milner, The project manager for this restoration

Any Bu3a member interested in car-sharing, in order to attend could inform secretary@bakewellu3a.org.uk

The Grade II* listed Wingfield Station was built in 1836-1840 to the designs of Francis Thompson, as one of a series of structures built for the North Midland Railway to Thompson’s designs. The building is one of the earliest surviving railway stations in the world, and is the sole survivor of Thompson’s picturesque sequence of twenty-four stations between Derby and Leeds, widely regarded as his finest work. The condition of the building however deteriorated severely after its closure in the 1960s, resulting in Amber Valley Borough Council serving a Compulsory Purchase Order on the owner, with grant support from Historic England. The restoration is an excellent example of what can be done with even badly neglected sites, and is an encouragement to all historic building fans - there are many of those all over Derbyshire!.

Tickets are £5 and can be bought at the shop in Cromford Mills or online from the Events Section of the Cromford Mills website.

This is one of a series of talks taking place over the next few months that you may be interested in attending. These talks are being jointly run by the Arkwright Society at Cromford Mills and Belper Mill North Volunteers.
