January 2019 Speaker
The New Year meeting in January was very well attended when a speaker from Nat West Bank gave us very useful information on Staying safe and secure online and avoiding scams as well as warning about scams from telephone and doorstep callers.
She also mentioned to beware of Lottery prize, Catalogue and Romance scams.
She continued her talk with an explanation of the difference between Scams and Fraud, and very importantly not to give any bank details to anyone. The top scam seemed to be Spoof payment requests where people were asked to change their payment details for TV licensing, for example.
Another useful tip she gave us was how to check if e-mails were genuine. She told us to hover the mouse over the sender’s name and if any unusual details appeared, then there was someone impersonating the actual e-mail address
