Baddow & Galleywood

March 2017 Speaker

Our speaker was Vic Knope from The Copped Hall Trust. As well as being a member of the Trust and a senior guide at Copped Hall, Epping, with over 12 years experience, he has been involved with the restoration for over 14 years and has been active in every area of the project. He was assisted by Phil McKinder, also an experienced guide at Copped Hall.

He gave us a very comprehensive power point presentation on the history of the estate.

Copped Hall was a fine 18th century building, which was ravaged by fire about 100 years ago. It then fell into disrepair for about 80 years. A nine year campaign was fought to save it from numerous large scale development proposals, and it was finally saved in 1995, when the specially formed Copped Hall Trust purchased the freehold.

Restoration started in at the beginning of this century and as well as the builders there have been many local residents who have volunteered their time and effort, especially in the walled garden. We now hope to arrange a group visit to Copped Hall in the summer. After questions from the audience , the meeting ended with a round of applause for the speaker.
