The University of the Third Age (U3A) movement is a unique and exciting organisation which aims to provide life-enhancing and life-changing opportunities. Retired and semi-retired people come together and learn together, not for qualifications but for its own reward: the sheer joy of discovery!
Members share their skills and life experiences: the learners teach and the teachers learn, and there is no distinction between them. There are no age restrictions - the only requirement for members is that they are no longer in full-time employment.
There are around 53 U3A branches in Scotland (over 900 in the UK), but Ayr U3A is the first in Ayrshire. Our first learning groups were set up in November 2016.
Annual membership is £15 per person from 1st April. This fee includes capitation fee to the National U3A and subscription to the quarterly magazine, "Third Age Matters".
New members joining in January - March will find that their membership is valid until March the following year.
If you are unsure if Ayr U3A is for you, then you are welcome to two taster sessions before deciding to join. Please contact the appropriate group facilitator (envelope icon on the group page) before attending a group. After 2 sessions we ask that you complete the membership form together with payment of the annual membership fees. Full details as to how to make payment are included on the form Membership Form 2020 C. Membership entitles you to join as many interest groups as you like.
The benefits of U3A membership also include:
- democratically run local groups;
- quarterly magazine, 'Third Age Matters';
- access to volunteer subject specialists;
- opportunities to attend study days and summer schools;
- regular meetings (usually monthly) to socialise, share experiences and listen to guest speakers;
- being part of a national and international organisation.
The U3A movement is supported by its national organisation, the Third Age Trust.
