Ten members of the group enjoyed a highly informative tour of Craigengillan Estate, led by estate owner Mark Gibson. The estate has many fine mature trees, but is also planning for the future by planting many acres of native hardwood trees, as well as improving existing forest by selective thinning. Reviving traditional skills in hedging, the estate now has 16 miles of recently planted hedgerows, which will grow to become impermeable barriers for stock, while providing a sanctuary for birds and other creatures.
One more highlight of our visit that was much appreciated - tea & coffee on arrival, with superb coffee cake from the local baker in Dalmellington!
Craigengillan is to feature on the BBC programme "Landward", sometime in April. The date has yet to be announced.
After our visit it was decided to order a tree as a thank you gift for Mark Gibson. A sorbus apricot queen has been ordered, and will be ready sometime from mid-November onwards. (Follow link on right for more information.)
