The group visited the workshop of Clachan Wood, near Girvan, on 21 February 2019. To quote from the company's website, "Clachan Wood specialises in the design and making of bespoke handmade furniture. Run by Stuart Clachan, the company provides a personal approach to bespoke furniture making, ensuring that the needs of our clients are fulfilled and that they are delighted with the finished product."
Stuart explained how he sources his wood, using mainly local sources of native hardwood timber, such as elm, ash or oak. Once to size, the wood undergoes a slow air- and kiln- drying process, often taking several years, to ensure it is in optimal condition for use in furniture. His pieces are all unique and individually designed to meet the specific requirements of the customer.
Stuart gave an informative and entertaining exposition of his craft. "You have to have a sense of humour to be in this job."
