Global History
Meeting Details:
Location: Members houses in Ashtead
Frequency: Monthly
Day of Week: Second Monday in the month
Time: 10.00 until 12.00
Details of Group Activities:
The Global History group has been going for over 10 years. We cover both UK and world history which gives us a very interesting choice of subjects.
We tend to have about five members speaking briefly each month on different topics. In recent months, we have been discussing UK Georgian history (1714 -1837) which none of us were experts on! Last month we looked at William IV and his time with Nelson in the Navy and his relationship with his long-term mistress and ten children; Protests (familiar territory today!) after the end of the Wars against Napoleon in 1815. We also looked at Mary Wolstencraft, the early feminist philosopher who is more well known now.
For the next six months or so we will be looking at Asia, starting with Japan; a new topic for most of us! I am looking forward to a talk on "Shogun" in 1600 (James Cavell's brilliant novel which is required reading in many US degree courses on Japan). We will also look at Japanese culture, traditional Ryokan Inns and not forgetting Japanese style bathing. We are promised pictures!
Who says history is boring?
