Some members have expressed interest in the establishment of a U3A Bowls group. After investigations, the committee decided initially at least to arrange for U3A members to play with an existing non-U3A group of retired individuals playing weekly on Tuesday mornings at Mayfield Memorial Hall. Those individuals together own the mats & can supply woods etc for those U3A members who do not have their own woods. In effect U3A members will be guests of those individuals who will remain in charge of the playing sessions. It is understood that they are about to acquire a second hand mat which is better than their reserve mat which they rarely rolled out until U3A boosted their number of players.
It is envisaged that some Petanque players will also want to play Bowls, & that is why U3A Bowls sessions are scheduled to take place on alternate Tuesday mornings. However, the non-U3A group play weekly, & the situation has developed that some U3A members do want to play Bowls weekly. That is acceptable to the non-U3A group. The main issue is that 2 mats may need to be rolled out by the Hall caretaker if attendance increases to render their use desirable.
One of the U3A Bowlers is requested to volunteer to become the co-ordinator to whom U3A members could state their probable attendance at the next Bowls session. That co-ordinator would then call Gwen Johnson, the leader of the existing group of Bowlers, with an indication of the number of U3A members likely to attend the session so that she can tell the Hall caretaker how many mats should be laid out.
Each U3A member will be required to pay £2.70 per session to play. That covers to cost of use of the Hall & mats & a cup of tea or coffee.
This page will be the main source of up to date information about progress in establishing the group. Click on Bowls Players for the names (but by reason of data regulations not the contact details) of those members who have expressed an interest in setting up this Bowls group.
Peter made enquiries about other possible venues & costs, & circulated the interested members by email on 16 November about the options. Click on Bowls Group Progress to see that & earlier emails.
Any other member of U3A who wishes to be kept informed about current proposals & plans should email Peter by clicking on the blue envelope.
Peter will periodically circulate all those members who have expressed interest about progress via the Beacon email system.
