Mobile 07821670263 (Only available to receive calls between 8.30am & 1.00pm on the day of the walk)
Meeting Place & Time:
Car Pool from corner opposite Homebase at Waterside Park at 9.30am prompt.
Please notify Brian (preferably by e-mail) if you are likely to go direct to the starting point of the walk.
Approximate Distance:
4.3 miles
Approximate Duration of Walk:
2 hours 45 minutes
Starting Point of Walk:
Approx 10.00am from The Boat Inn, Basford Bridge Ln, Cheddleton, (Postcode ST13 7EQ) (OS ref 981520) after arrival of car pool & after menu selection. Parking is available in the pub car park. To reach the pub turn left off the A523 at the sign to Coombes Valley RSPB Nature Reserve, then continue through Basford Green. This saves going into Leek.
Description of Walk:
Deep Hayes Country Park, the Caldon Canal and the Flint Mill. We start north and west skirting Cheddleton, through the old part of the town, then on gently rising ground through cow fields to the southern end of Deep Hayes Country Park. Some steps on the way down. There is an easy track on the east side of the lakes or a more demanding up and down path through woods on the west side of the lakes, you can choose. The final third of the walk is flat and along the Caldon canal towpath. We pass the Cheddleton Flint Mill which is worth a short stop. Total of about 8 good stiles. Total height climb about 150m which is less than most walks. If anyone wants to come for lunch and have a short flat walk, just go north along the towpath to meet us.
Food
Available afterwards at The Boat Inn. The menu is not on their website & cannot at the moment be listed here; it is simpler than some pubs but may change nearer the time because of a change in publican.
