The Strollers Group, now in it's fourth year, was established to provide easier walks than those offered by the main Walking Group. The aim will be to walk between 2 and 3 miles each time, trying to use routes that don’t involve any significant climbs and crossing as few stiles as possible. Walks usually start at Waterside or the group uses the Derby Connect Bus or we car share. Not all walkers have cars. It is much appreciated if those who do own cars are prepared to offer lifts to others in the group. On the occassions when the group car share it would be appreciated if walkers could bring a change of footwear for after the walk to save taking mud into the cars. The group is fortunate to be able to sometimes use the Derby connect bus service - free to bus pass holders. When this service is not available we use Moorlands Connect which, due to lack of funding, charge £3 single journey and £5 return journey. This is a fifteen seater bus so please reserve your seat before the day of the walk. Once the bus is full it is appreciated if car owners would be flexible in helping with transport.
Karen Tallant has kindly agreed to be the co-ordinator of the Strolling Group but it must be emphasised that her offer is dependent upon at least some of the potential members of the group being prepared to support her by periodically suggesting & leading strolls. Quite reasonably, she is not able to undertake the task of frequently being the leader. She is willing to organise a rota, & then by email to publicise the programme of strolls which members have suggested.
Nevertheless strollers are not unwelcome to participate in strolls even if they are not willing to ever devise & lead a walk. However, it is a fact that strolls will not take place if sufficient leaders are not forthcoming to relieve Karen from merely occasionally leading.
The U3A's insurance does not cover personal injury or accident except where there has been proven negligence on the part of the organisation. It is recommended walkers carry a record of any medical or contact details which may be useful in an emergency. Fellow walkers will hopefully try to be good Samaritans but neither they nor U3A can accept responsibility for actions taken or not taken.
It must be emphasised that neither the U3A nor Karen nor the walk leader for the day can accept responsibility towards strollers, who must take care of themselves. Unexpected hazards or livestock can be encountered. The attitude of the group will be to cooperate together to overcome them.

WALKS DURING COVID
Advice to Members Participating in Walks (including Strolls & Hikes) taking place during Covid-19 which are arranged by Ashbourne & District U3A.
1: Participants in any walk must either be a member of Ashbourne & District U3A or a prospective new member attending one walk as a trial.
2: Prior to participating in each walk, members must undertake their own personal assessment to enable them to decide and be confident that they should participate. Such risk assessment should take into consideration a person’s physical health, any underlying issues, age, & especially whether that person is experiencing Covid-19 symptoms. The assessment extends to include the condition of any person residing in the same household as the member or with whom the member has been in close contact & is known to the member to be showing any symptoms of Covid-19 or to be self-isolating, suspicious of having been infected. If such member or person with whom the member has been in close contact is showing any symptoms of Covid-19, such member must not participate in the walk but follow appropriate isolation and health guidance.
3: Such assessment is personal and does not need to be shared with any other person.
4: Participants must make their own arrangements to travel to the location specified for commencement of the walk & to travel home after the walk has ended. It is recommended that members should not share cars with other members who are not part of their household.
5: Ashbourne U3A will not make any arrangements for any food or refreshments during or following completion of the walk. What members may do amongst themselves is entirely up to them individually or collectively.
6: Participants should take into account that very probably there will be no access to toilets at the start or finish or during the walk.
7: Participants must be able to climb over stiles without assistance except from members who are part of their household.
8: Members should bring their own first aid kit & water & should not share these (except in real emergency) or refreshments or equipment (eg sticks).
9: Members are recommended to take hand sanitizers for personal use, especially after passing through gates or over stiles.
10: Members must observe Government current regulations concerning physical distancing & take face masks to be worn in situations where such distancing is impractical.
11: Catch coughs and sneezes in a tissue and dispose of them responsibly.
12: It should be remembered at all times that cross-contamination or infection might occur not only between members but also between members of the public encountered during the walk, or who have recently walked along the same route, or who may do so shortly afterwards. Members should be especially vigilant along narrow sections of the walk or when passing through gates or over stiles.
13: The maximum number of participants on any walk is 5 plus the leader, but the organizer of the walk shall have the discretion to set in advance & announce a lower limit for any particular walk.
14: The leader shall ensure that participants keep together as a group throughout the walk.
15: Members are required to accept instructions given during the walk by the leader.
16: Before commencement of the walk, the leader will record & preserve the names of every participant, this being a requirement for any subsequent track & trace becoming necessary.
17: Any member showing any symptoms of Covid-19 within 14 days after conclusion of a walk must promptly notify the leader of the walk or a member of the committee of Ashbourne & District U3A of that fact, apply for a Covid-19 test, & then notify the leader or committee member of the result of the test.
General Explanatory Notes:
A: This Advice applies in addition to the “Advice for New Walkers” which is displayed on Ashbourne & District U3A’s website & on the basis of which we have walked for over 12 years but, in the event of any conflict between the two, this Advice shall prevail.
B: As this Advice may frequently alter to comply with Government prevailing regulations, members intending to participate in any walk are required to read this Advice immediately prior to participating in such walk & each time to undertake their own personal assessment (see 2 above).
C: This Advice is based upon Advice issued by Third Age Trust on 23 October 2020, & takes into account regulations issued at that time by the Government together with further regulations issued on 26th November in respect of Tier 3 Areas applying throughout Derbyshire & Staffordshire.
