Our latest meeting - a report from Lizzie Love
(recovering from a nasty bout of illness)

I made it to Writing Group yesterday. Homework: the soundtrack of my life. There should have been audience. It was the best two quids'worth of entertainment you could have had.

It is amazing the skill and talent the group has developed over the last four years. And the confidence in reading their work aloud. Pat, who does stand-up as a hobby, was a hoot. Di gave us an Edinburgh childhood with the sounds of trams, rattling and squeaking, sparks flying from the wires, while Margaret gave us Glasgow tenements. Jane illustrated her late brother's life with lines from Bohemian Rhapsody, and Arnie sang his update on "Oh Sinner Man". Everyone had a different approach. You should have been there. We were on fire!

As for me I managed to condense my life into a page and a half, interspersed with snatches of songs or the odd verse. In order the songs were: A lullaby; Over the Rainbow; End of the News: Last Train to San Fernando; Wouldn't it be Loverly; We Shall Overcome; Lord of All I Behold; A Policeman's Lot; Flowers o the Forest; and Bad Times Just Around the Corner. The vocal chords are working fine now, though the lungs are still rubbish. I had a go anyway. Join your U3A I say! You won't regret it.

The Writing Group's meetings are varied with a mixture of readings, practical exercises, help with your particular challenges and generally an exploration of the whole world of writing. We aim to maintain the momentum for everyone to achieve their aims. You can expect encouragement, feedback and ideas. Ideally every member of the group will make their own contributions but there won’t be any pressure. Why not come along and see if it’s the right group for you? All welcome.

We meet every other Thursday at the Waterside Centre, 2 - 3.30pm. See the Events page for meeting dates.
