Thu Sep 8thCurrent AffairsThe two candidates for the job of Prime Minister are each claimimg to have the right plans for improving the country’s economy and dealing with what is becoming seriously rampant inflation. To help those of us who are not economists to understand, Bob Hodgson - economic consultant to the World Bank - explained it all superbly. He has a gift for dealing with complicated subjects in a way that is easy to understand. For example: inflation (at its highest rate since VE Day) is simply a pay cut for every one of us. Questions and challenges from members came thick and fast: attendance was second highest since the Current Affairs Group started nine years ago. A serious subject, thoroughly aired but with a good number of chuckles on the way.

That was our August meeting. On 8th September we’re going to try something entirely different. Four of our members are residents of Eliot Lodge which has quickly earned a reputation for having a remarkably happy atmosphere and community spirit and an enviable programme of activities. We hope that these four and perhaps one or two more will come and chat to us about their decisions to leave their own bricks and mortar castles, get out of the property market and downsize with a big D. It seems to have turned out very satisfactorily for all of them. 10am start finishing at high noon at Mayfield Memorial Hall on the second Thursday (but only the eighth day) in September.
