Fri Jan 18thLandscape & HeritageThe English village in the first half of the twentieth century.
A DVD showing everyday village life as it was from 1900-1960. The traditional spirit of the small country village - the charm of the buildings and the warmth of the welcome - is fondly remembered, but what was it really like to live in these communities? What were their houses like, what facilities did they have, where did they work, how were they entertained and educated, what sports did they play and what clubs did they join? What transport was available to them, and perhaps most important of all, what was it that makes us long for a similar quality of life now?

Thu Feb 14thCurrent AffairsArtificial intelligence seemed like one of these things we hear about but can safely ignore if we're not interested - such as 'social media' or 'blogging' or 'on-line banking' ....... all very well for some perhaps but not for me!

Well, artificial intelligence is here, all around us, and we continue to ignore it at our peril.

Anne Butterworth has been researching this fascinating subject. She has found that it is immense: there are more examples of artificial intelligence than you could shake a stick at. So, confident that she can rely on the experience, comments and contributions of us all, Anne will present an introduction to some aspects of artificial intelligence on St Valentine's Day. We look forward to comparing notes, swapping cautions and learning from each other.

Fri Feb 15thLandscape & HeritageBrunel and Stephenson, Men of Iron
DVD using unique computer-generated reconstructions, original journal entries and commentary from engineers and historians.
In the 19th Century some men shaped the landscape to their own design using iron, steam and fire. These remarkable men changed the world forever. In the world of engineering, Isambard Kingdom Brunel and Robert Stephenson were fierce rivals, but in private they were great friends. Brunel, son of one of the world’s most respected engineers, liked to build things that his rivals considered impossible. Stephenson, the son of a rough and ready self-made man, was more conservative and cautious. But both were dedicated to their craft – and both would work themselves to death creating the supreme technical achievements of their age.
