Thu Jul 18thWriting Meeting 2.00 - 3.30pm at The Waterside Centre
Thu Jul 18thCyclingDetails changed on 4 July 2019
Ride Leader - Ian

Meet at Doe Hill car park (B6025), near Tibshelf, at 10.30. Route: 5 Pits Trail.

The car park is on the B6014 Matlock to Tibshelf road. After Morton you go under the railway bridge and the car park is a few hundred yards on the right. It’s easy to miss the entrance, look for a height barrier. If you reach the cemetery you've gone too far.

From the Country Park we'll go along the trail to Tibshelf Ponds and pick up the 5 Pits Trail heading north to Holmewood. From there we'll take quiet roads to Hardwick Park and lunch at the visitor centre at the Hall. After lunch we’ll go by another quiet road to Rowthorne and head south to join the Teversal Trail to Teversal, Tibshelf Ponds and back to Doe Hill. There is a long steady climb up through the park to Hardwick Hall. There are few short climbs on the 5 Pits Trail, but the Teversal Trail is pretty flat.

If you would like to join us, please contact me before Saturday 13 July (by email or phone).

If you have never been cycling in this area, the title 'Pits Trail' may give the impression of a disused industrial landscape. But not so. The land has been reclaimed with care, and it is a lovely area to cycle through. 24 miles

Thu Aug 8thCurrent Affairs"Fury as £4billion British foreign aid budget used fixing POTHOLES abroad (Daily Express October 2018)"
How accurate was this headline? It is true that this country gives away a total of £14 billion each year. The top five country recipients of UK aid in 2015 were Pakistan, Ethiopia, Afghanistan, Nigeria and Syria. Are we happy with this? Wyn Reilly, who founded the Current Affairs group in 2013, was a colonial officer for many years - white pith helmet and brown knees - and knows a thing or two about foreign aid. He will tell us the facts and encourage us to express our possibly quite differing opinions.
