Arun East

The National U3A is keen to encourage members to participate in Research, in whatever form they desire.
To help with the thought process around this, a research guide entitled Getting involved in research has been produced.

The Third Age Trust has established a database of U3A research projects.

The Arun East research representative is Nova Brookes. If contacting Nova, please include your Arun East membership number in the 'Name' field of the form.

A precedent has already been set by members of other U3A's (and possibly by some of you) for taking part in university research projects - as participants. This is an excellent way of contributing to society generally, and possibly helping some of the younger members of our society gain a greater understanding of what it is like to be living in your "Third Age". An opportunity has arisen for those of you over 65 years young to do so right now! The invitation is in the student's own words. There is also a link to the survey on the right of this page.

Zoe McAndrews
Trainee Clinical Psychologist, University of Southampton
(Supervised by Dr Lusia Stopa, Professor of Clinical Psychology)

I am a third year trainee Clinical Psychologist at the University of Southampton. As part of my doctoral thesis, I am exploring how ageing and different life events affect the way that we respond to our emotions and emotional situations. If you decide to take part you will be asked to complete a brief sheet that describes you (such as your age and gender) along with a series of questionnaires that ask about your emotions and how you cope. This should take approximately 25-30 minutes.
By taking part in this study, you will be helping develop our understanding of how people manage their emotions throughout their life. We hope that this information will inform treatments to help people who find this process difficult.
As a thank you for taking part, you can opt into a prize draw to win one of six vouchers (1x £50, 2x £35, 3x £25), for either Amazon or Marks and Spencers.
To participate, you must be aged between 18-30, 40-55 or 65 years and above.

Michelle Fawn, a doctoral student at the University of Surrey, is conducting a research study and she
needs your help! If you are aged 65 years and above, she would love you to complete a questionnaire to support her research study looking at wellbeing in older adults. The questionnaire takes 20-30 minutes to complete and can be done online or via a paper questionnaire
that can be sent to you. If you are interested in participating please either type this link into your internet search bar (
or email Michelle on or call on 01483686864 for a paper version or for more information. Michelle would really appreciate your time and help with this project!
