The All Sorts and Gardening Groups combined for this month’s visit to Highfield House at Alfreton, the home of Ruth and Paul Peat, to see the snowdrops.
Paul escorted us round the woodland garden and explained how, over 25 years, he had personally planted all the snowdrops on his land and also onto the banks of the public footpath creating a wonderful spectacle at this time of the year. He also showed us round the summer garden which will be open for the NGS Yellow Book Scheme on Sunday 2 June.
We were then invited into their home for refreshments. There was a choice of soups to warm us through after our walk, cheese scones, fruit scones with jam and cream, lemon drizzle cake and a wonderfully light coffee sponge, all accompanied by plenty of tea and coffee. Ruth and Paul were very attentive and I am sure I speak for everyone when I thank them for their wonderful hospitality. I, for one, look forward to a June visit.
