Welcome to The Alford & District Website

U3A stands for the University of the Third Age, which is a self help organisation of people no longer in full-time employment, providing education, creative and leisure opportunities in a friendly environment. U3A membership is not related to a specific age but to a period in one's life (the third age) after the second age of full-time employment and parental responsibility. Anybody in their third age can join U3A and this includes people who are working part time. All you need is interest and enthusiasm.

LATEST NEWS A Zoom meeting and talk on Thursday April 22nd
Speaker  Steven Short

Using photographs and video clips Steve Short will bring to life the story of how these two great comedians met to become Britain's most loved double act. First appearing in 1954 with rather poor reviews they returned two years later and appeared in a series of massively popular television shows over the next twenty years. By 1976 they were awarded OBEs, with their partnership lasting until 1984 when Eric Morecambe sadly died.

This entertaining presentation by Steve includes the story of their unique comedy magic act and will bring back many memories of a much loved comedy partnership.

You don't need to have a camera or microphone to be able to see and hear the talk.  Just a connection to the internet by computer, tablet or mobile phone.

The link to the talk will be sent out free to members, but if you are not a member but are interested please send a request for the link to Janet Groome on

Alford & District U3A includes members from the surrounding area, and is a growing group. If you are interested in joining our U3A, why not come along to one of our monthly meetings, or telephone the Chairman if you would like to find out more first. We are always looking for new friends to join us and perhaps add to our group activities.

Our general meetings are usually held on the third Thursday of each month at St Wilfrid's Church Hall in Alford at 10.30am Members get together for a coffee and to hear what the various interest groups are doing. There is usually a guest speaker. The U3A approach to learning is - learning for pleasure.

Our membership charges are currently £12.00 per year.

Included in your membership is access to our Groups. Gatherings of people to learn and enjoy new skills, interests and meet new friends. Regular visits for lunch at local venues, learning new things much as Majong or a language. Enjoy hobbies with like minded people such as play reading, cycling, photography or playing musical instruments.

Due to COVID19 we are not currently holding meetings. But hopefully we will be back soon!

The U3A have created some podcasts (similar to a radio programme) for members. Below are links to the October and November ones:
