Advice on using MOOCs

Guildford U3A

Guildford U3A organised a group to follow together the FutureLearn course Shakespeare and his World. This was very successful with the whole group completing the course.

This was the experience of one group member:
"Since I joined the U3A several years back I had not managed to take part in any U3A activities but an email at the beginning of April 2016 intrigued me. "Would anyone like to join a discussion group about an online course called Shakespeare and his world?" the coordinator asked.

I immediately replied and since April have managed to fit in the ten week course which consists of watching online presentations by a professor from the University of Warwick in conjunction with the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust, reading the relevant play for that week, and then, the highlight for me, meeting several like-minded U3A members to discuss the course and the plays, also the life of the playwright. It is run by an organization called Futurelearn which provides the online courses free.

I have been impressed by the knowledge and commitment of the Guildford U3A members I have met and at enrolment in September, I’ll certainly be choosing more courses."

One of the options being offered by Guildford this Autumn follows up this course looking further into the values and thinking of Elizabethan and Jacobean drama, and sharing the ideas and perceptions underpinning it. This has been developed locally following the model of studying plays and discussing them together in local meetings.
