Tribute to Nancy Jones

Tribute to Nancy Jones – Invaluable Founder Member

It was a fortunate day for me when Nancy joined a sewing group I ran at the Community Centre in Abergele for, about that time, I had conceived the idea of setting up a branch of the then little known U3A. As she quoted many times in the years ahead she never stood a chance when Rosa learned she had secretarial skills. The rest is history. Whilst I went ahead with the organisation, recruitment, publicity, etc. Nancy got on with the typing and, consequently, the first Branch of the U3A was formed in North Wales.

The first few years were extremely hard for us, with having the intricacies of becoming a charity added to the workload, and Nancy’s knowledge was invaluable. Nancy was a very reserved and private person but we became staunch friends, which was just as well since, on one of our U3A trips to Germany, our shared hotel room was the size of a broom cupboard.

It is testament to the fact that Nancy must have been happy to have been ‘press ganged’ into the U3A in the first instance for she became, and remained, a member of several groups to the end of her days. Nancy and I became personal friends from the outset and complemented each other’s personalities, revealing a witty and humorous side of Nancy which few people knew.

Nancy, thank you for being a major force in the setting up and running of the Abergele U3A and or your loyal and unfailing friendship.
