Abergele & District

21st Birthday celebrations 2011-2012

Abergele and District U3A (covering Conwy and Denbighshire) opened it's 21st year celebrations at the monthly meeting on 1st September, 2011 with a special afternoon tea. The guests of honour, the Mayor of Abergele Cllr. John McClelland and founder members Nancy Jones and Marion Lyons, were welcomed by the Chairman Brian Elliot J.P.. The founder members spoke of the exciting and challenging times establishing the first U3A in North Wales when there were 20 members and the Chairman gave an update of the present situation and said his target was to achieve a membership of 300 this year. The Mayor wished the organisation well and hoped that the next 21years would bring continued success. The guests cut a large anniversary cake which was enjoyed by the membership. There was a display symbolising group activities and Group Leaders were on hand to discuss their particular groups.

Our 21st year celebrations came to a close on Thursday, 5th July with a celebration lunch at Colwyn Bay Cricket club in Rhos on Sea. After a very good meal the members were entertained by Ruth Moore Williams who is a professional story teller with a wide variety of stories to tell and musical instruments to play and tellof their origin. We were treated to her Victorian tales 'From Palour to Poorhouse'. We had a ghost story, music - we even had to sing for our 'supper'. To bring her tales to a close there was a Victorian Melodrama with audience participation. The scriptreaders were very entertaining with their expressive voices and accents. The sound effects department really got into the swing of things and the audience got all the oohs and aahs in the right places! The afternoon came to a close with tea and biscuits, for those with room left to eat, and a chat.

For those of you who would details of Ruth's full repertoire, follow the link on the right of this page to her web site.

Thank you to Geoff and John for their photographs of the birthday tea.
