History

The History Group meets on the 2nd Friday of the month at 11.30.

The group has been running for a number of years and, in that time, several large topics have been studied, including the worldwide effects of the Enlightenment and the spread of the Industrial Revolution. Recently a long period of time was devoted to the history of the Indian Subcontinent from the Harappan civilisation down to the independence of India and Pakistan.

We are now changing tack and, rather than spending extended periods on the study of large topics, we are moving to a more eclectic approach. Members of the group will nominate specific topics that they would like to be discussed across just one or two sessions. Topics may cover any historical subject in any location at any time period. Advance notice of subjects will enable all group members some time to research the subject in advance of discussion. To date, we have looked at the Phoenicians and the history of Poland. In the future we intend to consider 20th century France, the Celts, Persia and the Holy Roman Empire. Hopefully the list of topics will grow as time progresses.

The emphasis of the group is on informality and discussion. Consideration is given to questions of culture, religion, social history and the arts and sciences in addition to the framework provided by political history.

All are welcome to join us at any meeting
