German

Herzlich Willkommen!

There are two German groups and they normally meet on the first and third Tuesday of each month.

The Advanced Group is from 10am to 11 am. It is aimed at people who have a good prior knowledge of the German language. We improve our skills in listening to, reading and writing and, most importantly, speaking German, the emphasis being to expand conversational abilities and widen vocabulary. The group is student-led, with members taking turns to choose texts from many sources to read and discuss. We return to our usual meeting place - the Northern Arts Club - on Tuesday, 5 September.

The Intermediate Group is from 11:15 am to 12:15 pm. This group is facilitated by Brian Anderson. The work of the class is based around the topics in the coursebook Willkommen 2 by Heiner Schenke, a multi-media German adult learning programm, to ensure progress is made in Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking German. Additional opportunities for self-study using interactive on-line activities such as those from Easy German and Deutsche Welle may also be suggested. The group meets via Zoom on the first Tuesday of the month and in person in the Northern Arts Club on the third Tuesday.

The atmosphere in both groups is relaxed and informal. Please use the pigeon icon to ask for more information.

Advanced: Fiona Watson
Intermediate: Brian Anderson

Remember - there are many ways that you can continue with your German, learning at home. It is really beneficial to do a little every day. Even 15 minutes a day can help with language learning. Use the free apps like Duolingo, Memrise, Babbel, RosettaStone. They can be fun. You Tube is a fantastic source of material - just do a search. I like the series Learn German. Experiment and find new sources to expand your skills. The website of Deutsche Welle has a host of wonderful material at all levels. Watch films in German that you can find on Amazon Prime, Netflix or TalkTalk's 'Walter Presents' series. There is a lot available and try to listen to as much German as you can. Try a little every day and you'll surprise yourself how much you know and it will give you a focus.
