GROUP MEETINGS

Check on the group you are interested in on the 'Groups' page to find out if has restarted either on-line or indeed as a physical meeting

Wyre u3a (University of the Third Age)

Is one of over 800 u3as across the country and world wide. Like all u3a's it is aimed at people no longer in full time employment who share an interest in and a love of learning and who want to keep active in mind and body. Many of our members say that it is not only the shared learning which they enjoy but also the friendliness of the other members. The social aspects of belonging to a u3a are very important to us.

We came into being in early 2011 with just 74 members enrolled but now have over 380 members and 30 or so different interest groups. These numbers are growing all the time. Wyre u3a serves not only Wyre Borough but also Over Wyre and Blackpool. We do not, however, restrict membership and if you can get to our meetings and you would like to join you will be made most welcome.

u3a is not like a school, college or evening class with 'teachers' and 'pupils'. Members share their knowledge and experience and learn together and all are expected to play an active part. There is no curriculum - members decide for themselves what they want to learn and if they come across an interesting angle they follow it. No qualifications are needed to join and no awards are given - you don't have to prove you have learnt or done something.

It costs £17 for individual membership of Wyre u3a (2023 - 2024), this includes the £4.00 per person we pay to the central organising body, The Third Age Trust. Some group meetings take place in members homes but larger groups meet in hired premises. The most popular venue is Carleton Memorial Hall. In addition to the interest groups we hold a monthly meeting at 2 pm on the second Thursday of the month at Thornton Little Theatre, when we have guest speakers. All meetings are subsidised from membership fees up to a certain point.

If you are interested in joining us but not sure if u3a is for you then everyone is welcome to 1 introductory taster visit to 2 different groups and 1 monthly meeting as a guest paying £2.00 per group/meeting attended to help them to decide. After this you would be expected join if you wish to attend further groups/meetings.
A new members membership form for 2023 - 2024 is now available on the 'Forms' page.

We are now a Registered Charity No 1184776
