Computing Seminars
The computing seminars take place in Warlingham, on the 2nd and 4th Monday in the month, from 10-12 a.m. Teaching is done by demonstration using a data projector and screen, rather than "hands-on". The focus is on what computers can do, how they do it, and what effect they have on our lives.
The next series of seminars will recommence in September 2010, when we will revisit some of the topics covered in the last two years. Both new members, and those who "started but didn't finish" the first time round, will be welcome. We may also be joined by some new members from Caterham U3A.
To benefit from the sessions, you need to have some experience of using a computer, and be interested in discussing the ideas which they represent. If you are a complete beginner, the training sessions and online resources described below may be a suitable preliminary or alternative to the group meetings.
Training Sessions and Online Resources
An organisation called UK Online "provides free Online Basics training to help learners feel confident on the internet and email. The training being offered is an introduction to using computers and covers subjects such as how to use a mouse, understanding the keyboard, using email and using the internet safely. It is a great opportunity for individuals to understand and enjoy learning how to use the computer with some support from tutors."
The sessions use online training resources available from Myguide, which are primarily aimed at helping new computer users interact with public services via the internet. They are available at:
- The Central Library in Croydon, Katharine Street CR9 1ET, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday,
- Thornton Heath Library 190 Brigstock Road, CR7 7JB, Monday and Tuesday.
