Welcome
U3A stands for University of the Third Age, but the U3A movement is not a ‘university’ as we would understand it today - it uses the word in its original sense of people coming together to share and pursue special interests in all its forms. The local U3As can be described as self-help, self-managed learning cooperatives for older people no longer in full-time work. Members share learning and leisure experiences in a wide range of special interest groups. They pursue learning not for qualifications but for pleasure. No qualifications are needed to be part of a U3A and there are no accreditations, assessments or qualifications to be gained.
BRUNSWICK WESTWARD U3A is one of about 750 U3As all over the country. It aims to include the areas of West Hove, Hangleton, Knoll and Portslade especially but also has members from all over Brighton & Hove and beyond.
Most of our Special Interest Groups meet in members’ houses but for bigger meetings such as our AGM and Spring Celebratin (social event) we hire a hall, usually somewhere in Hove. Each Group organises its own activities with a Group Leader or Coordinator. Some Groups meet weekly, some fortnightly and some monthly.
We also organise monthly illustrated Talks by knowledgeable speakers, for which a hall is hired and which are open to all our members.
