MARCH 2024

Members' Monthly Friday Event
Friday 22 March at 2pm, Main Hall at The Shoreham Centre. Musical talk: 'Traditional Music of Britain & Ireland' by Joy Lewis and Derrick Hughes.
Joy and Derrick are a popular folk music duo based in Sussex who have been playing together for many years. Between them they play a wide variety of instruments including guitar, smallpipes, hammered dulcimer, bowed psaltery, concertina, harp, serpent and an ever-growing collection of recorders and whistles.
They play at weddings, concerts, parties and other social gatherings, and also provide musical talks and after-dinner entertainment for many different groups. Whatever the audience, their emphasis is always on entertainment with plenty of humour.
Non-members are welcome.

Please note: Recording and filming of performers at our monthly events is NOT permitted.

Groups Support Role – Person Needed Urgently
We urgently need someone who can guide the Groups Support Team for our u3a after a short handover period. Colin has done a brilliant temporary job supporting our current group coordinators but needs to retire from this role in April.
We have been fortunate to find two volunteers to do much of the work in the Groups Support Team – Sue and Chris. Sue will be handling all emails and Beacon support for Groups, while Chris will be helping to set up new groups and pop-ups. However, we cannot provide the support required for our group coordinators without someone to steer the team. The role comprises the following main tasks:

  • Liaison between the Group Support Team and the committee
  • Attend committee meetings to report on new group activity and feed back to the support team; handle or escalate issues as they arise; work with the team to ensure they have all they need to carry out their tasks
  • Organise or participate in meetings
  • Group Coordinator meetings (3 pa) and Open Day Meetings
  • Innovate
  • Identify and implement new ways of helping new and existing groups to run effectively.

If you would like to find out more about this role and what you can bring to it, please contact Groups Support or you can email the Chair.

New Groups for 2024
The following groups have recently started. For further information, or to enrol on any of them, please contact Groups Support to be put in touch with the relevant group coordinator:

  • Growing Your Own (plants)
  • Bridge 2
  • Cribbage
  • Classical Music
  • Skiing

Art & Mythology (led by Derek): Many famous paintings have been based on Myths - to fully understand and appreciate them requires knowledge of the Myth that inspired the Artist. The first group meeting is at 2pm on Thursday 21st March in Room 1 at the Shoreham Centre. To contact Derek for further information or to enrol please contact Groups Support.

The following groups have started but are currently full: Cycling4Fun; Knit and Natter.

Rummikub will now meet on the fourth Thursday afternoon of each month in the Conference Room at the Sussex Yacht Club.
Murder Mystery Book Club 3 is looking for new members.

Last month we reported that Sylvie was unable to continue to lead Singing for Pleasure and that the group would have to close. We are pleased to say that Sue H has done a great job in finding a way forward, and the group will continue to meet on a monthly basis.

Coach Trips
We are aware of considerable demand among our members for coach trips. Until someone offers to run such a group for us, we are aware of Sussex Wanderers, a local society who organise day and longer trips. They are a 3rd party that we are not responsible for, and they cannot be one of our groups as they require a separate membership fee of £25 and we have no control over their activities. However, we think some of you may be interested. They have monthly social meetings and day trips and holidays (2 or 3 annually, normally 4 nights duration) by coach. For further information and contact details please contact Groups Support.
