Penicuik & District

Events

Our monthly guest speaker meetings are usually held on the third Thursday of each month (except June, July, August and December) at 2 p.m. in Penicuik's Cowan Institute, also known as the Town Hall.

An Open Meeting features a talk by a guest speaker on a wide-ranging topic of general interest, with time for questions afterwards, followed by socialising over a cup of tea or coffee and a biscuit. There are also notice board displays with information about interest group, local and national activities. Entrance to these meetings is free to members, and visitors are welcome to attend for a small fee (currently £2). See the 'Notices' page for the latest programme.

The June meeting (usually the third Thursday) is a group visit (usually by coach) to a location of general interest such as Summerlee Museum of Scottish Industrial Life, Coatbridge in 2022 and world-famous The Burrell Collection in Glasgow in 2023. This year, with significant input from the Roslin Institute, we have arranged an almost day-long series of talk and demonstrations on Thursday 13th June (the second Thursday this time).

The December meeting is traditionally the Christmas Social, with various entertainments, a fun quiz, party refreshments and it is held on the second Thursday of the month.

The Burns' lunch (our third) will be held in the local Navaar hotel on Thursday 23rd January with a full 'Burns Supper' programme.

We have also a growing number of Interest Groups of which members can join as many as they like: these are really the core activity of every u3a: please see the 'Groups' page.
