Welcome to the Harwich Peninsula U3A web site.
If you are new to the U3A please to go the video at the bottom of this page which will explain it all.
If you would like to join the U3A please contact our membership secretary Sheila Allen tel. 01255 552510 or use the "Contact" page and select membership enquiry.
The history of Harwich dates back to the middle ages. First given a charter in 1318 it has primarily been a naval base, a commercial port and a site for ship building. The captain of the the Mayflower, Christopher Jones, lived here, and the ship called here en route to America. The famous diarist Samual Pepys was MP for Harwich. Buildings of special interest include the Guidhall, the Redoubt a well preserved Napoleonic fort, and the Electric Palace one of the oldest surviving cinemas in the UK. Now Harwich is mainly a commercial port for the continent, and the headquarters of Trinity House.
The University of the Third Age is a national and international network of self-regulating, local associations. The national representative body for U3As in the UK is The Third Age Trust. Members are normally not in full time employment. They form interest groups to continue existing interests or explore new ones. No qualifications are required, and none given. Interest groups set their own agendas and work at their own comfortable pace.
The Harwich Peninsula U3A serves Harwich, Dovercourt and Parkeston and the surrounding villages. Anyone not in full time employment in this area is welcome to join. It was founded in 2006. We have a monthly meeting at 2pm on second Tuesday of the month. We meet at the Marine Suite, Cliff Hotel, Dovercourt. Membership costs £13.50 per annum and covers all the groups you may wish to join.
To use the site please go to the "Groups" page for details of all the groups currently running. This will give you details of what the group does, when they meet and often the future programme they intend to follow. Also included are contact details for the group. If you wish to see the programme for the monthly meeting at the Cliff Hotel please go to the "Events" page. The "Links" page gives details of all links to external web sites included in the site.
